The 2019 AG’s Outstanding Technical Contributions Award was presented to Prof. Hujun Bao, who is now a distinguished professor in Zhejiang University.
Prof. Bao has worked in mesh generation and simulation, critical techniques in current modern industry, for over 20 years. The contributions include differential mesh deformation and editing, high quality robust pure quad mesh generation with theoretical guarantee from Morse-Smale Complex, initiation of automatic pure hex mesh generation by 3D frame field design, linearizing dynamic simulation by rotation-strain space governing equation and efficient inhomogeneous non-linear behavior simulation via optimized bases. These works have attracted a lot of attentions in community, and some of them become the topics in ACM SIGGRAPH (Asia) courses. Some techniques have been applied to the actual products (e.g. some 3D scanners of Shining3D, the leading 3D fabrication company in China).
Prof. Bao is also a leading researcher in the field of rendering in China. He and his team first introduced the sparsity analysis onto deriving the transportation properties of lights, and achieved significant acceleration on rendering realistic scenes with many lights. He also proposed several emerging real-time rendering techniques that enable several challenging visual effects at real-time rendering rate. These techniques have been successfully used in games and virtual reality systems. Recently, he has proposed next-generation rendering pipeline for better rendering optimization as well as new adaptions for VR/AR.
